A Tejano Son of Texas
The Story of Jose Policarpio "Polly" Rodriguez

Multimedia presentations of the productive and colorful life of a Tejano son of Texas as surveyor, frontier scout for the US Army, Texas Ranger, magistrate, rancher and minister.
Compiled by Rudi R. Rodriguez

Born in Zaragosa, Mexico in 1829, Jose Policarpio "Polly" Rodriguez apprenticed as a gunsmith in San Antonio, becoming an expert marksman and hunter. Polly worked with surveys and the Whiting/Smith expedition from San Antonio to El Paso. He was Head Guide and scout for succeeding roads and fort locations. Polly became a nationally renowned scout and Indian fighter who was awarded a presidential citation for valor and gallantry in battle. During the Civil War, Polly served as a Texas Ranger. After the war, he was Justice of the Peace and County Commissioner-a community leader, as well as developing his ranching and farming interests. Twice married and father of nine, Polly experienced an "awakening" which led him to his calling as a circuit preacher in Texas and Mexico. His is "a story of the sagacity of life and the indomitable spirit of Texas, its early pioneering days its development and future."
